As we approach the true end of summer (the clocks change on Sunday), and prepare for Hallow'een (Monday), today's first couple of shots are something of a prelude. Gravestones, corvids and rats…
Ok, the rat wasn't in the graveyard but under a rock. Watching me, watching it. The rat blinked first and retreated further down its hole.
But it wasn't all gloom… a squirrel was out gathering nuts (as they do).
While this female mallard was playing cuckoo by sequestering a moorhen's nest. A handy spot to keep warm and dry, and take 40 winks.
Camera note: all shots taken with the Canon 7D EF and 400mm f/5.6L USM lens.

Always enjoy your photos and blog, but having just returned to the states from my first visit to the UK since beginning to bird and photograph I am glad to say that I am now seeing familiar species. Great shots recently.
Mark, yes I can't believe how quickly the time has disappeared. Still a couple of months to go though.
Darko, it passes the time! LOL!
Dave, thanks! Always nice to see familiar species. Old friends.
Mick, now if I could get a raven! That would be something (apparently they've been seen in Sussex recently).
Erwin, thanks!
Sami, thanks. The second picture is cropped a bit more. I just really like to see them perched on those old grave stones.

I do love rats, and that's a great photo :).
Thanks Gaina!
Just need a ship rat or two (with plague fleas on board) to complete the party
Very nice Halloween post!
Adele, I'm not sure that's a party I'd want to attend! :yikes:
Lois, thanks!
Nice shots
