No real theme today, just a series of shots taken morning, afternoon and night.

One of the local herons is back at the pond (in the mornings), and was posing beautifully in the tree that dominates the small island in the centre of the pond.

The swallows are also active. These two shots were taken at lunchtime.

I can't leave the pond without at least a couple of photos of the ducklings.

And at home, tonight… a fox cub. What else?

  1. Lovely heron! I spotted one flying out of the park this morning … a brown, or juvenile great blue.
Are the swallows after water-surface insects, or are they just getting really close to the water?
Any attrition of the ducklings yet? Those terrapins must be eying them with lunch in mind. It's too bad the cute quotient is so high.
It seems the cubs are regulars, though not all of them, or not all at once … maybe one of your neighbours is competing with you.

  2. I guess heron was drying wings. It looks similar to a pose cormorants has when they dry their wings :left:

  3. There's no denying the cuteness of those ducklings. The heron looks a bit bemused. Maybe it's the sunshine

  4. dW, these are grey herons, slightly smaller than the blue but otherwise quite similar. The swallows picks insects off the surface (and just above). it's a good hunting ground for them (and for the house martins and swifts which also sweep the pond in this manner).

We're down one duckling as far as I can tell. As well as terrapins, there are foxes and sparrowhawks in the area.

I suspect the foxes are hiding out in a quiet part of a less-used garden, but judging from the size of carcasses the adults occasionally carry through, someone nearby is being extremely generous to them.

  5. Darko, it's such a good pose when they do they hang themselves out to dry like that.

  6. Adele, I thought the heron had quite a severe look on its face, something I doubt a duckling could ever achieve. 🙂

    Carcasses? What sort of carcasses?

  8. dW, I may have exaggerated, but Shutterbug has wandered through with some exceedingly large bones in the past few weeks. He had one which he was barely able to carry!
