After the excitement of yesterday's barn owl things were much quieter today. It was foggy early this morning, and the mists were still lingering by lunchtime. All of which means that I have very few shots from today, but instead can catch up on some overlooked images from the past week.

From Monday , a pair of jousting moorhens. The one on the left of the shot is presumably a female, watching which of the two males will prevail. These little battles break out constantly at the moment.

The next two shots are from the middle of the week. First a gull feeding on a fish. This was photographed near Eastbourne, and the gull was being harried by crows.

And this is one of several newt shots I've taken in recent evenings. They are becoming quite active now the weather has warmed up. There are one or two frogs as well, but no sign of any spawn as yet.

These next shots were mentioned yesterday, but I think quite reasonably put to one side for 24 hours. I took a number of shots of this blackbird but I think this is my favourite.

This is more of a reference: a heron being mobbed by herring gulls.

A proper shot of the heron…

And a blue tit, mid swoop.

As for today, as I said at the beginning there really isn't much to report. About all I can muster are these two shots of a running greylag. It didn't even make it into the air!

Camera note: all shots taken with the Canon 7D. Moorhens and gull were with the EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L USM IS lens, the newt was taken with the EF 100mm f/2.8L macro IS USM lens, and the rest with the EF 400mm f/5.6L USM lens.

  1. The blackbird shot is sheer comedy, Words!
The fish-eating gull is a remarkable shot: I've never seen a gull with such a small fish. Here, they catch bigger ones, and pick them apart.
The others are quite up to your usual standards, but I just had to mention the blackbird and the gull.

  2. *slaps a caption on the blackbird photo* "Say that again" (and underneath) "I dare you!"

And the heron shot is magnificent.

  3. For bits and pieces, you made a nice photo collection, Words

And for moorhen's fight, I think that black one with red on a beak won :knight:

    :jester:

  4. dW, thanks. I liked the pose of the blackbird too. The gull would prefer a larger fish (I'm sure), but was just enjoying a quick snack.

  5. Felix, thanks. Good caption!

  6. Darko, thanks. Yes the black one with the red beak always wins! 😉

  7. I knew it

  8. Stunning shots! I like the last one especially!
