Butterflies at Seven Sisters

I would have liked a little more sunshine this morning, but it was mild enough to bring out the butterflies when I stopped by at Seven Sisters Country Park, just outside Eastbourne. There was little in the way of bird life, so I wandered along the edge of the fields where butterflies are an easy sighting. Several species were present, but the most numerous were the marbled whites, one of my favourite subjects (but flighty, and with a preference for settling in long grass).

There were small skippers as well, and among the rest these are the pick:

Rat Scrap at Falmer Pond

It was quiet at the pond today… overcast and a lot cooler than yesterday when we had record July temperatures. The rats are pretty visible at the moment and I spotted some mixing it with the ducks at the edge of the pond.

Fight time! I didn’t see that coming! The ducks enjoy a ringside view.

And over!

Later, when things had calmed down…

Sandwich Lunch at Rottingdean

Not just any sandwich, but a small flight of sandwich terns enjoying the hottest day of the year down at Rottingdean. It was their calls that first caught my attention, a distinctive sound among the shrieking of the gulls. There were maybe a dozen or so, flying circuits and diving to the sea after fish.

I wasn’t able to get nearly close enough for anything to spectacular, but these may give an idea of the action.
