Goose and Other Patterns

If you follow the Permuted twitter feed you’ll have seen this first shot earlier this evening.

greylag neck

It’s a close crop of the neck of a greylag goose. I loved the hard texture of the feathers. Here’s the full shot.

I also took a wing detail, again looking for textures and patterns, trying something slightly different for a change.

Later in the day I did take some slightly more conventional shots (and one that isn’t). First is a boxer dog that was enjoying a run in the country. It was taken against the light, but the movement was good.

Next is a little grebe (or ‘dabchick’). It’s tricky to get close to these tiny water birds, and they spend an inordinate amount of time beneath the surface. I caught this one just as it was beginning a dive, hence the forward posture and slightly fluffed body. One of my best of this species.

The final shot is a watery abstract. It’s a rickety fence reflected in the meanders at Seven Sisters. I’ve tweaked the contrast on this one to help bring out the colour.

Buzzards and a skylark

Well, the promise of sunshine held good. Good walking weather, so I headed out to the fields. Little in the way of wildlife, but some nice views, and great dappled light in the woodland that fringes the area.

Out in the open, the skylarks are beginning to make themselves known, their trilling song breaking through the quiet.

And buzzards. Several of them, but generally too far distant to trouble camera. This one was a long way off, but just about in range.

Jackdaw on a Feeder

The main photo today was taken in the gloom last Friday. It’s on of the many jackdaws managing to negotiate a peanut feeder at work. I like the way the gloom of the day gives it a slightly gothic feel, fitting for what was Friday the 13th.

Gloom again today, and again just a single photo. This time it’s a great spotted woodpecker on the fringe of the local woods. Not a great shot, but it’s always nice to watch them.

Great Spotted Woodpecker

Sunday was sunny (again, quite fitting). I didn’t take many photos as we were busy clearing the garden but I think this is my first photo of a butterfly this year. It’s a somewhat muted early season peacock butterfly.

The forecast for the next couple of days looks a lot better. It will be cold, but clear with some sun. Here’s hoping!
