Cormorant

The cormorant is one of my favourite coastal birds. They seem so out of place, a remnant of a prehistoric past. They’re always a pleasure to see, and I was in luck this morning flying as one flew over the edge of Friston Forest and out over Seven Sisters Country Park.

Just one more shot today, in what is a short post. Shortly after the cormorant had moved away, a flock of Canada geese took to the air and flew directly over the A259. I often see them come over the road, but for once I wasn’t driving underneath them. I’s not a great shot, but it is typical of the views I get on this particular drive. You can click on the photo to see it in a larger size.

Eastbourne and Rottingdean Views

An unusual post for me in that it is almost entirely focused on landscapes. My day took me across the county to Eastbourne in the morning, and then to Rottingdean in the evening. It’s a beautiful part of the country, and most of it falls within the South Downs National Park. The first couple of shots were taken at Seven Sisters, just outside Eastbourne, early this morning.

Eastbourne itself is about 10 minutes along the coast, and I had a few minutes on the seafront before the start of the working day. The sun was bright, and the beach all but deserted. It’s less developed than Brighton seafront, but typical of many of our seaside resorts.

The pillbox on the hill is (was) part of the south coast’s wartime naval defences. It’s a tourist attraction these days.

This is the pier. I quite like it. It’s in better condition than Brighton’s West Pier 😉 and far more elegant than the Palace Pier.

And another view along the seafront, looking towards the pier.

Early evening, and I was in Rottingdean. The sun was still shining, but the views are very different along this part of the coast.

And just one wildlife shot to close. A rock pipit perched on the cliffs at Rottingdean.

South Downs National Park Views

Autumn has arrived on cue. The temperature has fallen around 10°C. There was rain this morning, and again this evening. Between the showers the sun did put in an appearance, and I headed out to the Downs. These views are on the edge of the South Downs National Park (literally the border zone), just outside Falmer Village. They’ll be familiar to anyone who has followed this blog over the years, but the repetition is part of the pleasure of nature watching… seeing the seasons and the landscape change through the year, and re-creating itself with subtle modifications as time passes.

Apart from the horses and sheep on the hills, and a lone buzzard far in the distance, the only wildlife shots from today are some young starlings. They were hanging out back in the village, waiting patiently to be fed.

Most of them congregated on the chimney stack of a local house.

One, however, was more ambitious and wanted to be seen on TV 😉
