Fox Cubs on a Misty Night

A typical spring night. In other words a grey mist shrouded the garden this evening, which even if it doesn’t put off the fox cubs does present some challenges in processing the images. Two of the cubs put in an appearance. They are still being cautious as a group so I’m not sure how many I will get to see. But I’m used to waiting. This is a regular pattern as the bolder cubs venture forth and their more reticent siblings hang back enjoying the security of the adults.

And then there were five (fox cubs)

After yesterday’s excitement with the first photos of a fox cub in the garden, I decided to see what the trail camera had captured over the past week or so. The cubs have been more frequent visitors than I’d realized. Sometimes just one or two, but there were a couple of clips with five tiny fox cubs in the garden. You can see the video (plus three adults) at the end of this entry.

Meanwhile it won’t come as much of a surprise that I was back in the garden this evening. This time, no adult… but two cubs turned up. Their visit was fairly brief as a barking dog in a neighbouring garden sent them scurrying back to the safety of their den. Or possibly to another friendly garden. I swear I heard the distinctive sound of fork on tin from over the fences. Anyway, here’s what I saw this evening.

And now a video treat. The clips are taken over several nights and a brief glimpse of some of the late night garden activity.

Pretty Brings a Cub to Visit

Pretty, our regular vixen doesn’t have any of her own fox cubs, but she is supporting a senior vixen in a ‘helper’ role. This is common behaviour among foxes. Pretty, herself only just a year old is working hard supporting the senior vixen with baby-sitting, food gathering and other support. She was in the garden this evening gathering up some chicken scraps which she dutifully took back to the nearby cubs. She returned a few minutes later, and this time had a cub in tow. This was the first proper visit by a cub this year.

No doubt there will be many more visits over the coming weeks. Pretty is still the main visitor, but even Mama has put in the occasional visit recently.
