First Fox Cub of 2018

The annual wait for a first fox cub sighting has come early this year. The cubs haven’t yet ventured into our garden, but our neighbour mentioned that he had seen them at the rear of his garden so I’ve been keeping an eye open. Very little activity, but this afternoon one youngster did poke its head out for a few moments.

My line of sight is partly obscured by garden furniture, fencing and branches; but only partly. And it is very cute 🙂

It may be a week or so before they venture as far as our garden, but you can be absolutely sure that I’ll be quietly watching! There are at least three adults in the vicinity (Pretty, Mama Vixen and another). Here’s a short video clip of them being very noisy at the end of March.

Camera note: all photos taken with the Canon 7D Mark II and EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS II USM lens.

A Little Dog Fox Special

The ‘Little Dog Fox’ is something of an outsider of the group. He’s the runt of the litter and gets bullied by the other foxes, and has even lost a small part of his ear (presumably in one of the many fights he gets into). He gives as good as he gets, screams and rushes at the other foxes, but can also be very sweet and submissive. These are a few pictures taken of him during today, starting with a new habit of his: knocking on the back door!

Black Tail

Of all the young foxes we have visiting, there is one who stands out. We’ve called him Black Tail, after his magnificent dark brush. He’s a tall young fox, and very elegant. He’s also well-behaved and quite bold. I suspect he may be developing a wider range than the other foxes as he frequently disappears down the side of the house, rather than retreating to the rear of the garden.
