A collection of foxes

Cormorant plus others

This is a bit of a reversion to some very traditional posts. A variety of birds from the local village pond at Falmer, plus a couple of bits and pieces taken in the garden.

I’ll start with the main event, the cormorant, photographed last Friday morning at Falmer Pond. It was warm and sunny, and my second time over there in the week.

The cormorant wasn’t alone. A heron was also lurking…

That was a good start to the day, but after that there’s nothing until Sunday afternoon in the garden. Mid-afternoon several buzzards flew over (pursued by herring gulls), but among them I spotted a pair of peregrines as well.

Last night (Sunday) I also got a number of photos of the male fox, one of several that frequent the garden at night. This is the one with the nicked ear, and he’s still shy, still won’t let me within about 8 or 9 metres of him. But I will persevere…

There’s also a vixen plus a couple of other foxes that I’ve spotted on teh trail camera… and another badger/fox dust-up (all still to be processed).

Last thing tonight is one more shot of the cormorant from Friday.

Camera note: all birds taken with the Canon 7D Mark II and EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS II USM lens. I used the EF 200mm f/2.8L II USM lens for the fox.

Fox and Badger Encounter

The trail camera has been busy over the past couple of weeks. There are several foxes (at least four) visiting the garden, including a lactating vixen. These clips are of another of teh foxes (the dominant male) encountering a badger. They get into a minor dispute… Keep the sound up as some of the audible action takes place off-camera.

Footage take on a Bushnell Trophy Cam HD.

Sunrise, Stonechat and Fox

Nothing like a descriptive title… especially when there really isn’t much of a theme, just three images taken over the past 24 hours.

The first is our friendly neighbourhood fox. I’ve been neglectful of photographing him, but he’s been coming anyway, and close scrutiny of the trail camera (plus one direct sighting) confirms that there are at least three foxes around at the moment, plus a badger. He’s still playing hard to get though and disappears from sight if I make any attempt to approach too close.

Next up is a small bird taken this morning at Sheepcote Valley (I’d stopped off to see if I could spot any of the short eared owls. Reliable reports suggest that they have returned for the winter). It’s a stonechat, and the morning light at this time of year is near perfect.

Finally, the cause of all that golden light… just after sunrise.
