Early Morning Owl

Well you can’t keep a good owl down, and now I know a little more about its habits I was able to find it early this morning. The ground was frosty, and the sun just coming up over the Downs.

I was taking photos of some sheep, and then a stone chat and some skylarks (I love hearing them in the morning), when the owl flew in over my shoulder and headed down the valley. I got a few not-very-good shots before I lost sight of it. I tracked its path, but couldn’t see any sign of it perching or flying. But it’s a short-eared owl and as well as those other bird things they do, they also do this. Yes, they hide in the long grass. I almost missed it, but there it was just sitting still.

We watched each other for a while, and then it took to the air. Once again I clipped its wings on take off.

But half a flap on and I got this.

Nice way to start the day. Cold, yes; but I’m not complaining 🙂

Chelsea (London Views)

Work took me to London today (Chelsea Harbour). The fates conveniently provided a little bit of sunshine and a chance to take a few urban landscape shots between appointments. These were taken in and around Chelsea Harbour/Imperial Wharf, just off the King’s Road.

Foxes Mating

After a decade of photos and trail cameras I found my first image of mating foxes on the most recent set of trail cam videos. The video itself was woefully over-exposed and almost pure white. I almost missed it when I was scanning the footage (literally a white screen with the barest flicker of movement on it).

It was captured at the time of day when the camera stays on night-infra red mode, but there is sufficient light for everything to burn out. It only captured a few seconds. None of my video editing tools would cope with the exposure problems, but I was able to play around with it just enough extract a frame as a still. I then had to force the contrasts to an extreme level to get a viewable image.
