After a gloomy start (we were shrouded in mist first thing), today turned out to be warm, bright and sunny. And very colourful!

I grabbed this first shot while trying to photograph a pair of very active darters which were flitting around in the warm sunshine.

Pond reflections

I then wandered over to where I'd seen the jays yesterday. There were a couple more about, but so well hidden in the tree canopy that I didn't even attempt a photo. Instead I turned to the squirrels, which are at the height of autumn activity. There are more photos in the Squirrels album.

Blue Squirrel

A hint of pink

But the most spectacular display came with tonight's sunset. A wonderful deep red sky, shot through with cloud formations. The rich colour comes from the slight underexposure of the shots. And I don't look through the viewfinder when I do these. I value my eyesight too much.

Camera note: All today's shots were taken with the 100-400L lens.

  1. Amazing sunset! I took Kelly out for a quick walk last night and saw three squirrels (no pictures though). They certainly seem very busy at the moment. I love the way the light is on the head of the one in your first shot and the second is posing very nicely!

  2. Adele, Welcome home! I bet Kelly was glad to see you 😀

  3. Thankyou  Kelly is lying by my chair right now in her "you know I'm asking for a walk without asking!" mood! 😀

  4. Welcome home Adele, what plane did you fly on lol:P

Great shots there Words, i was unfortunatly doing an evening shift at work so i missed it, i might see it tonight but iam at a club too awww lol:P

Iam going to Heathrow spotting on Sunday hope the weather is nice:D

  5. Hi Mark, thanks! I had a feeling you might ask that!

I used two planes. The first was a really tiny one from Campbell River to Vancouver. That was with Coastal Mountain Air and apparently it was a Beechcraft 1900 (I know nothing about airplane types but I looked it up while I was onboard!) I used Zoom to go Vancouver – Calgary – Gatwick. I haven't flown with them before and it was quite nice, but Air Canada are nicer (would that I could afford to go with AC more often!) The Calgary stopover turned into a minor epic but I'll talk about that when I do a post on my blog later.

  6. Amazing sunset, almost unreal!

  7. It was real, and vivid. The wispy cloud patterns were amazing, like a genie from a lamp.

  8. Only nature can provide those kind of art shows. we are lucky when we can witness it. 😀

  9. What a sunset
