The dewpond proved a fruitful spot this lunchtime, with several darters clinging to the fence surrounding the pond and one pair in typical mating activity. I've added several shots to the Butterflies and Bugs album (plus a Painted Lady), but this one is probably the pick of the bunch.

No sign of the woodpecker today, but the squirrels were in a foraging frenzy and this one – not realizing I was in the vicinity – darted out of the woods into broad sunshine.

This fellow is rarely camera shy, and tonight was no exception. He spent about 25 minutes out there with me mid-evening, and for most of that time there was the distinctive rustling of the other young fox on the far side of the fence. I would love her to show her face (I'm assuming it's a young vixen), but most nights she seems happy to stay out of sight, albeit just a yard or so away.

Camera note: Dragonflies and squirrel taken with the EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L USM IS lens, and the fox with the Sigma 105mm F2.8 EX DG macro.

  1. Fantastic shot of the squirrel!

The fox is developing a remarkably thick brush! 🙂

  2. I've just read a story about dragonflies mating. It's translated as 'The Heartvine', by Izumi Kyoka.

  3. Beautiful photos, as always. Our neighbor has 2 foxes that visit. I wish I could encourage them to my house too, but we have chickens and the two do not mix well.

  4. Lovelly pics, the Dragonflies look nice and the Squirrell looks hungry lol:P

  5. Great close-up of the squirrel

  6. Thanks! I don't know who was more surprised, me or the squirrel. But he was the one who froze 😉

  7. Mark, I must get round to re-naming my album 'East' Sussex!

  8. Lois, I see the problem. Chickens and foxes aren't the best of mixes unless the chickens are very well secured.
