Fox Cub Photo Special

It's been a while, but in the early hours of Thursday morning I managed to get my first photo of this season's fox cubs. From monitoring the trail cam I know that there are at least three cubs and that they are usually accompanied by the vixen but that the male also brings them out to play. As inquisitive youngsters, they also venture out on their own. I'll track back through video over the next few days to get an estimate of their birth date, but I would guess that they are no more than 6 or 7 weeks old.

This is the very first shot. It was misty last night which has impacted on the quality of the shot.

This one, also from the early hours of Thursday shows off the distinctive blue eyes of young foxes. In time that will fade to the more usual dark brown. It's enhanced by the camera flash.

The video was once again hampered by mists, but this is a fun sequence which includes a couple of cubs and both adult foxes.

Camera note: first three shots taken with the Canon 7D and EF 24-105 F4L IS USM lens. Final three taken with the EF 100mm f/2.8L macro IS USM
lens.

    dW, I'm playing around with the trail camera settings as it tends to over-expose, especially in the fog. It's great to see the cubs around, though they are still quite shy so I have to be careful not to spook them.

    Well, that's the closest to sheepdog behaviour that I've ever seen in a fox! She must be exhausted looking after those – or she will be before much longer, anyhow :faint:
