It's that time of year when I spend much of the evening crouched down by the side of the garden pond watching the newts feast on the abundant supply of frog spawn.

The spawn is developing nicely (this from Sunday night).

The newts are lively.

And together they create a fascinating spectacle as the newts play 'hunt the spawn'.

  1. Interesting shots, Words … watching the cleanup crew keep the frog population from becoming a nuisance.
It looks like you're going to have a fine crop of duckweed.

  2.

  3. A plenty of food around :chef:

  4. Darko, and when they feel like a change they can snack on damselfly nymphs (though they can put up a bit more of fight).

  5. dW, the weed is the great success story of this particular pond, followed at some distance by the newts. The poor frogs have a rough time of it.

  6. Andy, thanks!

  7. Hunter and prey – a miniature and aquatic Serengeti!

  8. Adele, watching the newts out hunting is one of my personal spring highlights. 🙂
