I'm still blurring my photos, this time though I had a cooperative heron to work with. For the technically minded I'm shooting these at around 1/5s to 1/10s.

I also spotted a cormorant coming in to land on the top of a tree. Problem was that while the branch is perfectly capable of supporting smaller birds, it couldn't quite handle the weight of a large and well-fed cormorant. Look to the bottom centre of the second shot for the falling branch.

Wings are obviously extremely useful in such situations, and it soon found a rather more secure perch.

  1. I don't really care for the blurred heron, but that doesn't mean the idea is bad; you just didn't have good luck.
On the other hand, the cormorant breaking the branch is fantastic luck, and you were prepared.

  2. Last photo:
"OMG, I need to lose some weight!" :insane:

  3. There's something very exciting about the "blurred" photos. I want to see more of you experimenting with those settings. 🙂

Oh and pssst … the second cormorant photo is a wow!
    Another amazing flight catch! :coffee:

  4. Darko, LOL! I'm sure this must happen to birds al the time, but it's the first time I've been lucky enough to see it!

  5. dW, I was satisfied with the heron shots, but I know what you mean. It's an altogether more complicated subject so they lack the cleanness of the gulls. I think the first one works ok, partly due to the vegetation on the right of the shot.

I was watching the cormorant come i to land on the tree (it uses it sometimes). The luck was in having just enough room in the frame to catch the falling branch. It was the first thing I looked for when I got the shot.

  6. Erwin, thanks!

  7. Cynthia, with the current overcast mornings I'll be taking plenty more shots in this style. I'm trying to work out which shots work and which don't. I throw a lot away!

  8. LOL, that cormorant should spend some more time at the gym!

  9. Adele, it was a classic moment! 😀

  10. Nice Shots
