Meet the Fourth Fox Cub

Tonight there were four fox cubs in the garden. The usual three were at the front of the garden when a fourth fox appeared at the far end. It eventually moved more centrally, but still keeping its distance, but close enough to get a decent identification photo. The distinctive mark is the nicked-ear.

Just two other quick shots (from around 200 taken tonight). First the young vixen (who I'm calling Poppy). She's enjoying a game of 'teach-yourself hunting'.

And the last shot is 'rough-ear', but picked more for the composition than anything else.

    Poppy, good name.

Is Nick too obvious for #4?

It's great that you're now able to recognise them as individuals. It'll be interesting to see which ones hang around when the autumn comes.

Yes, I thought of the name Nick too. LOL.

    Nice roses!

Apparently, they have no great desire for sugars … roses (and most blossoms, for that matter) are quite edible, and have lots of sugars. Perhaps they prefer more complex carbs, like the peanuts, which also have an added protein load.

They are probably drawn to the fats in the peanuts is my guess.

    High-energy stuff … fats, sugars.

Mick, I was thinking of Nick or Nicky for number 4 so something along those line will probably stick. I very rarely see him/her though.

dW/Marilyn, they do tend to leave flowers alone (other than trampling over them occasionally), but they do like sweet foods when they can get them. I put peanuts down because cats aren't interested in them!

Adele, they're just about at the stage where the individual personalities are becoming clear, which also helps with identification. They're certainly a friendly bunch and I suspect at least one will stay around this year. Possibly Poppy or Rough Ear. They seem the most confident.

Marilyn, thanks. The roses are finally coming into bloom, and make a nice setting for foxes. We also have fox gloves (the yellow stalks in the background of that shot).

    Darko, or even Nico 😉

My cat licks the salt off a peanut, then leaves it lying there. Quite a treat to find in one's stocking feet.
He does it to soda crackers, too … nothing quite like stepping on a cold, soggy soda cracker in the dark.

Not something I've had the pleasure of experiencing!
