Late last night an explosion of noise in the garden revealed a pair of foxes in what appeared to be a courtship ritual. Lots of calling and chasing, with a brief demonstration of a 'fox trot' when they both rear up on hind legs. All of that was viewed from the window with no chance of pictures.

The trail cam didn't capture the rapid action (it's sited further up the garden), but it did pick up the same pair slightly earlier in the evening. The fox nearer the camera in the first three frames is Shutterbug. The other fox is the vixen.

  1. First one looked like a fight but it was get-to-know-each-other-better ritual 😀

  2. Good to see their interactions. Maybe they'll bring cubs to the garden next spring 🙂

  3. Darko, yes that's a greeting posture they're showing. 🙂

  4. Adele, I think it probably depends just how far away the den is. I'm not going to hold my breath… the vixen is impossibly shy. We'll see.

  5. What a treat that you were able to watch and listen to this.

With luck hanging around with Shutterbug will help to draw her out of herself.

  7. Lois, yes occasionally it's good not to take photos but just let them be foxes.

  8. Mick, if only you were right, but I fear she will stay in the shadows as much as she can.
