Isn't he just. I had been trying to photograph some house martins (without any success), but when I saw this fellow instead of rushing up the nearest tree which they usually do, he shot across a field.

You were obviously in the right place at the right time.

That's a great sequence, but the movie clip is wonderful! Very nice idea

And good luck with the martins; I think photographing any birds of that type (at least in flight) is about as easy as photographing bats on the wing!

Mark, I was surprised it went in the direction it did but it made for a great opportunity. The squirrels round here are much more wary than the ones in parks, so it's tricky to get close up to them. They nearly always present some sort of phtographic problem (usually by beeing in thick shade). Their favourite trick is scarpering to the other side of the trunk from wherever I'm standing. Now that makes for a very tricky shot 😆

Adele, I did the movie in something called Ulead GIF Animator 5… comes bundled with my web package. Doing it as an mpg is much less hungry than a gif. As for the martins, there were dozens of them. I managed to get about 5 shots with them in frame but nothing too sharp. I had around 50 'misses'. They are sooooo fast and erratic. I think the only way would be to get a tripod, fix a focussing point and fire away whenever they look like they're about to enter the approximate space. Aiming at them is almost impossible.

I'd say a touch easier than bats though… at least you have some light with birds!
