Fox Cubs Pure and Simple

Very little text tonight, just some more photos from the past couple of days. It’s going to be hard to keep up if things stay the way they are. The cubs are a joy. Lively and quite bold, though I am still using a long lens so as not to get them too comfortable around me.

These two are quite bold, but still in the sharing stage (it won’t last)

Fox Family 2017

Things are looking very good out in the garden. Last night I spent about an hour watching fruitlessly for the foxes (and cub), getting no more than a glimpse as the adults flitted across the rear of the garden. I took one last look in the early hours of the morning and spotted the adult male sitting calmly at the back of the garden… with a cub!

And then they were gone…

One last peek from the youngster

That got me thinking about the trail camera. Was the interaction caught on film? I grabbed the data card this afternoon and have put together a small selection of clips. There are five fox cubs, and the clips show all of them together in a couple of sequences, plus other interactions with both of the adults.

I can see some late night fox watching ahead…

Fox Cubs 2017

Basically, I’m grinning ear to ear. I’ve just been in the garden and expected to see the large male adult fox who has been a constant visitor to the garden. To my utter delight I instead was met by a tiny little fox cub! It’s clearly only just beginning to explore away from its den. So cute and so small! I managed a few quick photos before it retreated to the cover at the back of the garden.

First sighting of a fox cub in 2017. It’s tiny and probably not more than about 6 weeks old.

That’s a big mouthful, little fella!

This is who I had been expecting to see. The adult male fox gathering food last night

Many more hours watching ahead of me in the coming weeks. Has quite made my Easter!
