Runner Ducks

Apologies to anyone who came by yesterday and saw a DNS failure notice. I’d been tweaking some settings on my host and then changed my mind and then the site went down. Good support, and all was back up by morning. Anyway, the weather has been conspiring against me today although there was a brief period early this morning when the clouds cleared and the sun shone down. About that time the local Indian runner ducks spotted one of the locals arriving with the daily food parcel 😉

Here are the ducks. They are such odd looking creatures, domesticated from wild ducks and originally bred for their egg-laying and the fact that you could walk them to market. This group has taken up residence at the local pond. I suspect they originally arrived by car.

Time for Feathers (and just a hint of fur)

Once again it was very foggy this morning, but despite the conditions I headed to the pond. As you can see the conditions were – let’s say – sub-optimal.

The skies had cleared by mid-morning. The small flock of greylag geese were in typically rumbustious mood.

There was the briefest hint of some sunshine too. The Muscovy ducks (known as ‘ugly ducks’ locally), were enjoying a drink out on the island in the centre of the pond.

And of course there are always the mallards and the herring gulls…

The gull took off as I edged in for a closer look. The duck and the rat (yes, a hint of fur) were rather more preoccupied with foraging.

Tonight’s final shot is a cute family portrait!

A Day of Surprises

As everyone who reads this blog will know, I visit Falmer Pond very frequently and so there’s generally very little that occurs that that comes in the category of a surprise. There are the regular ducks and gulls and geese, and the more or less occasional visits by herons, egrets, sandpipers and cormorants. Today though there a pair of birds did catch me by surprise. I presume they have flown in, but the village pond being what it is I suppose they could have walked over from a neighbouring farm, or even been ‘released’ at the pond from captivity or rescue. I really don’t know. Anyway, whatever I do expect to see at the pond, I really wasn’t expecting this beautiful pair of Muscovy ducks.

They were very placid, and spent most of the time standing calmly at the edge of the pond watching the world go by. And the world in this case includes a World War 2 German aircraft! This flew over at lunchtime. It’s actually a Gomhouria Mk 6, made up in Luftwaffe livery.

There was one more surprise waiting for me when I arrived home. Young foxes start life by being fed, and gradually learn to scavenge. At around this age (just over five months) they develop their hunting skills. I came home to find the evidence of their first ‘kill’. I knew it was dead because it had flies on it. 😉

And here’s one of the villains of the piece.
