I've been wondering about how to improve the close ups too, but am going to try out the Raynox macro-lens adaptors. These are supposed to be much better than standard diopters, and are easier to add/remove than an extension tube.
I'm going to have to investigate further on what to get next, but I suspect some variant on a ring flash will be necessary if I get in much closer. Saw some good write-ups of the Raynox by googling.
yes, I normally avoid anything that looks like a diopter, but quite a few people are starting to take notice of the Raynox stuff. I'm persuaded to give them a try. Otherwise I'd be heading down the extension tube route also. The Raynox looks a bit more compact than extension tubes and easier to change in the field.
A ring flash can be quite handy- I've seen photos at least with them. So far though, I think my camera budget for the year has been exhausted. To some extent, the wireless flash with the alpha does mean I can escape the restriction of a flash on the camera itself.

Wood Mouse.
Nope! Though you're on the right track.
hedgehog?
The eyes suggest a nocturnal beastie.
Obviously too easy ;). Spot on Andy!
Sounds good. Yes let's set something up.
I thought it would be a Squirrell as the recent post was on them, very nice close up:D
Wow, great shot!
100% crop. I was surprised it was so sharp. Pleased, but surprised!
:eyes: That is one heck of a close up.
That's pretty much on the limit of the lens unless I get an extender of some sort.

E.g. the Raynox DCR-250 has following flickr group dedicated to it-
