The Return of the Cormorant

A few weeks ago a young cormorant took up temporary residence at our local village pond. It vanished after two or three weeks, but early this morning in the autumnal mist and drizzle, I caught a glimpse of a familiar shape on the pond. The light was dire and within a few moments of this shot the cormorant took off and disappeared into the distance over the fields.

The weather had cleared by lunchtime, and after a brief circuit of the pond I spotted the cormorant again, perched on one of the posts which are sited near the central island.

He wasn't going anywhere quickly (or slowly for that matter), though he did strech his wings…

…and he did almost fall off his perch.

He ignored the passing ducks…

peered into the depths…

and plucked some downy feathers.

The lone vigil continues…

Does that pond have fish? Probably because he won`t hang around for too long if there is nothing to snack :chef:

Erwin, thanks. I got some better ones today in the morning sunshine. They'll be up later.

I've figured out why they look so primeval. It's the neck – it's so…snakelike :eyes:
