Out in the garden this morning a sparrowhawk was circling.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.permuted.org.uk\/photography\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/02\/sparrowhawk_0702093105.jpg\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.permuted.org.uk\/photography\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/02\/sparrowhawk_0702093105.jpg\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" alt=\"sparrowhawk\" \/><span class=\"aligncenter\">Sparrowhawk<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The weather held good until after lunch, and I debated whether to go searching for kestrels on the Downs or to head for the sea and the visiting fulmars. The sea birds won out, and I made my way to Rottingdean Beach. <br \/><span class='imgcenter'><img alt='' src='https:\/\/www.permuted.org.uk\/photography\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/02\/rottingdean_0702093519.jpg' \/><\/span> <span class=\"aligncenter\">Rottingdean Beach<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The tide was out, and the gulls were gathered in small mixed flocks.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.permuted.org.uk\/photography\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/02\/gulls_0702093406.jpg\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.permuted.org.uk\/photography\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/02\/gulls_0702093406.jpg\" width=\"600\" height=\"253\" alt=\"gulls\" \/><span class=\"aligncenter\">Various gulls<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p>A pair of <a href=\"http:\/\/my.opera.com\/Words\/albums\/showpic.dml?album=688633&amp;picture=9379941\" target=\"_blank\">black-backed gulls<\/a> flew over, and a lone curlew came in to the shore.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.permuted.org.uk\/photography\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/02\/curlew_0702093500.jpg\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.permuted.org.uk\/photography\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/02\/curlew_0702093500.jpg\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" alt=\"curlew\" \/><span class=\"aligncenter\">Curlew<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p>There were also a few oystercatchers and plovers about, but the stars of Rottingdean at the moment are the fulmars which skim the cliff tops&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.permuted.org.uk\/fox\/fulmar\/album\/slides\/fulmar_0702093131.html\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.permuted.org.uk\/photography\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/02\/fulmar_0702093131.jpg\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" alt=\"fulmar\" \/><span class=\"aligncenter\">Fulmar<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Perch in hollows&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.permuted.org.uk\/fox\/fulmar\/album\/slides\/fulmar_0702093307.html\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.permuted.org.uk\/photography\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/02\/fulmar_0702093307.jpg\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" alt=\"fulmar\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Squabble noisily among themselves&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.permuted.org.uk\/fox\/fulmar\/album\/slides\/fulmar_0702093318.html\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.permuted.org.uk\/photography\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/02\/fulmar_0702093318.jpg\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" alt=\"fulmar\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>And patrol their territory with impressive dedication&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.permuted.org.uk\/fox\/fulmar\/album\/slides\/fulmar_0702093474.html\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.permuted.org.uk\/photography\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/02\/fulmar_0702093474.jpg\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" alt=\"fulmar\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>There are several more shots in the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.permuted.org.uk\/fox\/fulmar\/album\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\">Fulmar<\/a> album. As for the fox, I spent the best part of an hour watching for him this evening, and caught a glimpse as he stood at the rear of the garden. He stayed in the shadows though, so once again there&#39;s no photo. But I&#39;m in for the long game&#8230; and hoping for some slightly warmer nights.
