And time to get out the macro lens. <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.permuted.org.uk\/photography\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/04\/dandelion_seedhead_1404095597.jpg\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.permuted.org.uk\/photography\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/04\/dandelion_seedhead_1404095597.jpg\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><span class=\"aligncenter\">Dandelion seed head<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p>As for the creatures, the bees are becoming active and doing a good job of spreading pollen.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.permuted.org.uk\/photography\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/04\/bee_1404095613.jpg\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.permuted.org.uk\/photography\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/04\/bee_1404095613.jpg\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><span class=\"aligncenter\">Bee on dandelion<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p>And here&#39;s a hoverfly. These aren&#39;t bees or wasps (despite their striped appearance), and are excellent predators of greenfly. Good for the ecology of the garden, and a favourite for macro photography.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.permuted.org.uk\/photography\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/04\/hoverfly_1404095603.jpg\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.permuted.org.uk\/photography\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/04\/hoverfly_1404095603.jpg\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><span class=\"aligncenter\">Hoverfly<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p>But there are other small creatures to photograph, and today&#39;s pick of the smaller birds was a distant <a href=\"http:\/\/my.opera.com\/Words\/albums\/showpic.dml?album=730663&amp;picture=9977175\" target=\"_blank\">whitethroat<\/a>, and this very cooperative skylark.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.permuted.org.uk\/photography\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/04\/skylark_1404095560.jpg\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.permuted.org.uk\/photography\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/04\/skylark_1404095560.jpg\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><span class=\"aligncenter\">Skylark swooping to land<\/span><\/a><br \/><span class=\"aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/natureblognetwork.com\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/natureblognetwork.com\/button.php?u=Words\" width=\"0\" height=\"0\" alt=\"Nature Blog Network\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/span><br \/><i>Camera note: the macros were all taken with the Sigma 105mm F2.8 EX DG macro lens, with the on-board flash set to help freeze the action and draw out the colours (I dialled in lots of negative flash compensation to stop the shots from being over exposed).
