I went back today, and this time they were gathered in a wider part of the lake, and much closer to the footpath. Several pairs were challenging each other providing a fascinating half hour, and plenty of opportunities to capture some of the action. Take magpies. These three were engaging in some localized fighting of their own.<br \/><span class='imgcenter'><img alt='' src='https:\/\/www.permuted.org.uk\/photography\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/magpies_0501115496.jpg' \/><\/span> <\/p>\n<p>Which they continued in a nearby tree&#8230;<br \/><span class='imgcenter'><img alt='' src='https:\/\/www.permuted.org.uk\/photography\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/magpies_0501115516.jpg' \/><\/span> <\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, overhead a local heron was being seen off by a belligerent crow (a passing pigeon is keeping a safe distance in this shot).<br \/><span class='imgcenter'><img alt='' src='https:\/\/www.permuted.org.uk\/photography\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/heron_crow_pigeon_0501115778.jpg' \/><\/span> <\/p>\n<p>As for the rats&#8230; they were just running for cover.
