Their larval gills appear to have been almost fully reabsorbed, and their movement is still very slow. <br \/><span class='imgcenter'><img alt='' src='https:\/\/www.permuted.org.uk\/photography\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/newt_eft_0810116921.jpg' \/><\/span> <\/p>\n<p>At this stage in their development I feel reasonably secure in calling them &#39;efts&#39;, although the term is somewhat disputed. While there is agreement that &#39;eft&#39; refers to a young newt, there are differences in opinion as to whether this refers to the true larval (aquatic\/gilled) stage, or to the newly emergent land newt. If anyone has a definitive definition, please let me know.<br \/><span class='imgcenter'><img alt='' src='https:\/\/www.permuted.org.uk\/photography\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/newt_eft_0810116925.jpg' \/><\/span> <\/p>\n<p><span class='imgcenter'><img alt='' src='https:\/\/www.permuted.org.uk\/photography\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/newt_eft_0810116929.jpg' \/><\/span> <\/p>\n<p>As for the foxes&#8230; they continue to visit nightly, but other than occasional visits by Shutterbug they have proved extremely camera-shy this year.
