It's great to have the butterflies back in the garden and they were making the most of the good (hot) weather. There were numerous whites and a few meadow browns around as well, but the red admiral caught my attention. The shots were taken into deep shade, hence the slow shutter speed and high motion blur on this first shot.

Now one when it had settled.

The night-time garden has been going through some changes, with the fox cubs being much less frequent visitors. Having two badgers to contend with, and more active adult foxes, may have something to do with it. It's early in the season, but the adult foxes are reasserting their territorial rights, though not yet to the point where they actively chase off the young. This sequence shows both badgers, and an adult fox with a cub. The first badger seems to have some swelling around the legs.

With that in mind it was therefore a very welcome surprise to see one of the cubs (Shy Boy) this evening. Not only did he appear, but he decided to settle down in the longer grass for a good long nap.

Camera note: butterfly shots taken with the Canon 7D and EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L USM IS lens.
