Heavy downpours and leaden skies eventually gave way to warmer sunny conditions, perfect for spending a few hours down at Rottingdean.

For once we didn't head straight to the coast, but paused by the village pond and then went on to wander around the gardens of Rudyard Kipling's home which are always worth a visit.

The gardens are beautiful at this time of year, but as ever my attention (and camera) was focused on what animal life I could see. I missed the shot of woodpecker flying across the croquet lawn, but did spot a rose chafer as it flew past (no doubt in search of the rose garden).

Numerous thrushes were busy feeding. This one had just excavated a slug.

We'd parked near the seafront, so it seemed silly not to step down to the beach as we were heading home. I'm glad we did. Out on the concrete groyne, which doubles as a walkway out over the beach, I spotted a cormorant. It's very unusual for them to park themselves this close to the beach, but it was a perfect opportunity for me. I even managed some video.

And to end the day, the young fox Shy Boy showed up this evening.
