The first sighting was of a grey wagtail, a hopelessly mis-named bird since it happens to be brightly coloured and shines out like a beacon against almost any background.

On the other hand the jauntily named pied wagtail, is indeed predominantly grey and could quite easily pass muster with monochromatic tag.

The pieds are great to watch as they take short, sharp flights after insects. The second shot shows the wagtail with its reward.

I can understand how this third species got its name… for the distinctive blue cap, though it could equally be known as the 'masked tit' due to its archetypical bandit mask. It's an old favourite and very common, but cute and in the right light always worth a photo.

Camera note: all shots taken with the Canon 7D and EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L USM IS lens.

[980
45,815,120
post-2438","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-birds-2","tag-blue-tit","tag-grey-wagtail","tag-pied-wagtail","entry
["GET
