{"id":26629,"date":"2018-05-16T22:53:07","date_gmt":"2018-05-16T21:53:07","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.permuted.org.uk\/photography\/?p=26629"},"modified":"2018-05-17T23:56:25","modified_gmt":"2018-05-17T22:56:25","slug":"reds","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.permuted.org.uk\/photography\/reds\/","title":{"rendered":"Reds&#8230;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Ok, it&#8217;s a long while since I&#8217;ve simply themed a page like this, but everything here is red&#8230; (even when they don&#8217;t look like they are).<\/p>\n<p>The first is a red-eared terrapin. They are feral (discarded domestic animals). The terrapins have survived for a number of years in Falmer Pond as &#8211; essentially &#8211; they are at the top of the local food chain with no natural predators. There are several, and this one is close to the size of a dinner plate. It&#8217;s unlikely that they&#8217;ll be able to breed in our climate as the eggs are laid on the ground and need a <a href=\"https:\/\/canalrivertrust.org.uk\/enjoy-the-waterways\/canal-and-river-wildlife\/the-rogues-gallery\/terrapins\">consistent temperature<\/a> above 25C for a couple of months. <\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_26630\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-26630\" style=\"width: 1000px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.permuted.org.uk\/photography\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/terrapin_1505189358.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.permuted.org.uk\/photography\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/terrapin_1505189358.jpg\" alt=\"red-eared terrapin\" width=\"1000\" height=\"666\" class=\"size-full wp-image-26630\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.permuted.org.uk\/photography\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/terrapin_1505189358.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/www.permuted.org.uk\/photography\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/terrapin_1505189358-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-26630\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Red-eared Terrapin basking at Falmer Pond, East Sussex<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The next little sequence is another non-native species, but rather less damaging to local wildlife. This one was sharing calls with a mate (who was out of sight).
