The Kestrel is the most common British bird of prey, and is a frequently seen hovering over downland. When hunting it will often hover at 20-30 foot before swooping on its prey. It prefers fields with longish grass, which is ideal habitat for small mice and voles. These shots were taken at various locations in Sussex. The sequence at the beginning shows a kestrel carefully devouring its kill (probably a vole). Some of the later shots (July and August 2008) show a kestrel eating a bush cricket while hovering. If you enjoyed these, I've put together a separate album of another sequence of a kestrel feeding |
