Lazy Afternoon Fox and Sparrowhawk

I was going to include some photos from Rottingdean in this post, but to be honest while I enjoyed a pleasant walk along the beach today there was little really to catch my interest with the camera. Instead these two shots are left over from yesterday. They were taken while I was photographing Bully Boy. I see distant sparrowhawks fairly regularly here, but this one came in low over the garden. It was a nice sighting, and the shots are passable.

The fox in the title is Bully Boy, who is turning into a very lazy garden fox.

Buzzard Buzzed!

Today was one of those strange days where I seemed to spend most of my time not really seeing anything worth photographing, but was lucky enough to have a small handful of encounters that more than made up for the down time. The star turns were a heron, a buzzard, and a welcome re-appearance in the garden by Bully Boy, the young fox. I’m going to stick with the buzzard for this entry, partly because I like the shots, but also because it’s the first time I’ve seen them share air space with flocks of swallows and house martins.

I’m not entirely convinced the smaller birds were mobbing the raptor but with so many young fledglings around they may have been more than usually defensive of their patch. If they were mobbing, their technique is rather less confrontational than the full-frontal attack mode so often adopted by gulls and corvids.

House Martins at Home

The young house martins featured in recent posts have fledged, but they’ve not gone far and are still a lively addition to the local bird life at Falmer. They’re also keeping the adults busy searching for food, on the wing and down at the edge of the pond. These first two shots were taken yesterday.

That’s a very typical view of these agile and frenetic birds. They spend time sweeping the surface of the pond and then slowly gather in small groups on the fringes to take a breather and find easy pickings in the mud before getting in some more flying time.

I was lucky enough to see a different side of them this morning. A large number of fledglings were congregating on a tiled porch on one of the houses that overlooks the pond. There are a few adults in among them, but the majority have only been out of the nest a short while.
