Sad to report that one of the longest-standing members of the Falmer Pond community of wildlife is no more. The old White Goose, who has kept a watchful eye over many broods of greylag goslings, met his end last night. All that remained this morning was a pile of feathers scattered in an adjacent field. A fox possibly. He’ll be missed, and to mark the moment two photos of him from earlier in the year.
Camera note: first photo taken with the Canon 7D and EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L USM IS lens; the second was with the EF 400mm f/5.6L USM lens.

15 Oct 2014That is so sad. I remember how he stood guard over the goslings. I hope he fed a fair few foxes but I’d prefer the goose alive. Thank you for the brilliant photographs.

16 Oct 2014Very sad indeed, I used to go every Thursday to see those geese and he was by far the greediest out of them. Sad to see him go. Was due to give him a visit in a few weeks as I haven’t been in the area. Definitely will be missed by me

16 Oct 2014Lauren, he was certainly greedy and don’t ever recall seeing him fly. But he was a great guardian to the young goslings. A shame 🙁

17 Oct 2014I was going to visit him when I came home, its a shame.

17 Oct 2014Sorry to hear that. But I guess, foxes need to eat, too….

19 Oct 2014Darko, they certainly do. I suspect he may have been slowing down. He was old and probably not as fierce as he once was.
