More dampness today, at least there is this evening which is the only time I've been able to get outside. It doesn't help that the cloud base is at a paltry 300', and since we live at around 500' elevation the act of stepping outside means entering the middle of a cloud. It's not exactly like walking in rain, but you still end up getting wet through.

Using flash in these conditions means getting close to the subject. Otherwise the water droplets catch and reflect the light and everything is overexposed and extremely flat. It also helps to get low down as the ground level warmth creates a pocket where the mist loses density.

Those were from tonight. Last night we just had intermittent rain…

  1. They are so charming!

I know what you mean about stepping out into a cloud … when I was a kid we lived for a while in the mountains outside San Diego, and there were a few times when there would be clouds (a semi-arid area doesn't get many clouds) and they would be low enough to sit on our mountain. Nights, with a full moon, were utterly enchanting. The very air glowed. Even the family dog knew that this was unusual and wonderful. Looking back, I wonder that she didn't find the Old Straight Track, and run, bounding from mountain to mountain.

  2. Using flash in that kind of weather can also give very interesting results when taking landscape shots with wide angle 😉

  3. They seem to be relatively stoical about the rain. The second to last photo is very pretty.

  4. Adele, rain must be very natural to them since they've seen little else in their short lives. They're learning to pose well now that they have become a little more relaxed.

  5. dW, I can well imagine clouds being a rarity in Southern California. Sounds beautiful! No such problem in Southern England!

  6. Sami, yes I can see how that would work by picking up the ethereal light. I take so few landscape shots though. 🙁
