What’s better than a fox?

That's easy… a fox and two cubs. 😀
A cautious little cub

Two little cubs

Two cubs and mum

They were born on 8/9 March and have only just started to appear in the garden. I saw two tonight, but I think there may be at least three of the little balls of fluff. The next few weeks should be fun.

They look like they're trying to be stealthy. It's really quite a treat seeing them.

    What's the mum eating?

    Awww! Lucky, lucky you! 😀

Even at that age they look as if they know exactly where they're going! I notice that mother is starting to look a little ragged

Deb, that was my first proper encounter with them. I love the way they hug together as they creep forward. The vixen is eating a 'markie' (dog biscuit).

Darko, it's a real treat to see young cubs again. We've missed out for the last year or so.

Adele, I had a feeling we might be lucky this year, but you can never be sure. The vixen is looking slightly the worse for wear. They really do work hard.

Is the den in your garden or else very near by and accessible? I have a feeding vixen that comes round every night for the food i put out but as yet no cubs have appeared, i imagine the fences around me are too high for little cubs?

  25. Words May 3, 2010 at 1:05 am #

Dave, I've not located the den but it must be very close. They don't venture far at this age (but are quite capable of getting under fences… they only need about as much of a gap as a hedgehog would use 🙂

still no little cubs here yet, vixen mum is definitely feeding them though, we have a big dog fox and a vixen 'helper' that visit too although its usually the mum that arrives very soon or straight away after we put out their dinner – makes me think she can hear or smell us put it out so maybe the den is very near by?

  29. Words May 9, 2010 at 10:05 pm #

Dave, the cubs may well be around, but just out very late. Ours are most active after about 2.00 in the morning.

my vixen carries off mouthfuls of food back down the bottom of the garden and out of sight in the bushes – i guess she may then be eating the food herself to regurgitate for the cubs later or else perhaps the cubs are neatrby and out of sight and hse gives the mouthfuls directly to them? Hmm? i need a way to establish whats going on?
tonight there both vixens came together (assuming i am right and the 'helper' is in fact a vixen and not a young male)and there was some shoving and nipping between them over the food.

AH! What time do you put out your food? I've been feeding soon after dark – following the daylength through out the seasons. At what age do the cubs begin eating solid food?

  33. Words May 10, 2010 at 11:05 pm #

Dave, not until quite late otherwise the neighbourhood cats get there first. It probably explains why there's so much very late activity. The cubs begin to take regurgitated food from about 4 weeks, and quickly move to solids. These cubs are just over 8 weeks old now.

  34. Words May 11, 2010 at 12:05 am #

It sounds like they are taking it away to feed cubs. Our vixen does much the same. The cubs don't travel very far from the den at the moment, but if the adults are using your garden the cubs may follow over the next few weeks.
