I thought it was going to be another long night of waiting for the fox to appear so he could get his mange treatment. One of the cubs seems keen to take over the garden and showed up early evening.

While he was sniffing around (and I was taking some photos), another fox appeared on the garage roof. I thought it was another youngster, which to be honest was a bit of a surprise as they seem to have singled off recently. And maybe I'm right about that. Instead of the usual slow greeting that we witnessed throughout the summer, the garage fox leapt down and more or less charged straight at the one in the photo, who in turn hightailed to the rear of the garden with the other in close pursuit. It was over in less than a flash. Literally… by the time the flash-gun fired they were out of shot.

There were no barks or squeals, but I did hear plenty of rustling in the undergrowth. And then silence. After a moment or two, from half way down the garden, the old fella himself emerged. Now I really don't think he was the one who charged from the garage (though it was so quick I can't be certain), so he may have been lurking somewhere. But whatever it was that did happen, with the fuss over he took up his usual dominant position near the top of the steps.

Which gave me the chance to nip inside to get his medicinal feed.

And then he got into posing…

While I'm here I might as well mention that there are some new photos in the Flying album. And for once the birds are actually… er… flying. Here's a sample shot of a juvenile Herring Gull.
