It was a dismal, grey, damp day today. Constant drizzle and no chance of any photos at lunchtime. I was at my computer at work during the afternoon, and noticed some birdsong outside my window. Several bluetits were flitting around in the tree outside, brightening the gloom. Could I get any shots? Tricky. The part of the window that opens touches the tree canopy, so doesn't really open more than a couple of inches. And opening it would scare them away. Plus there's one of those sun filters on the glass which darkens everything even further. But the little beauties were inches away!

I gave in, turned off the internal lights to reduce reflection, got out the camera, cranked up to ISO 800 and fired away. Here's the results after a little software tweaking.

Through the filtered glass

Again through the glass

I finally opened up a crack in the window

  1. That's impressive!

I haven't even touched my camera today 🙁

But your pictures do go to show that with a little effort even the most dismal days can produce results.

  4. I love your bird pictures… almost as much as the fox pictures.

  5. Adele,

You wouldn't be able to fit the tamron in my office! And I don't blame you for not going out with it today.

Thanks. I must admit I'm having fun with the birds. Most of them are completely new to me. I simply never used to notice them.

  7. I have been having fun trying to take Blue Tits too yesterday, i got a couple of good shots, they seem to be more confident when its cloudy for some reason:)

The reason why iam up at this hour, iam off to Gatwick soon as Mum and Dad return today so off to the Airport in a while to see them.:P

  8. Very cute, the little bird. Great photos!!!

    Yes, they're my photos 🙂

You have amazing birds in Australia. Much more exotic than we generally find over here. Not just the kookaburras but the absolutely astonishing Lyre Bird. (I've been looking for an excuse to post that link for ages.)

  10. I didn't realize the Lyre Bird was Australian!
See, I learn something every day!

Have a lovely day over there in the U.K.
While over here in Sydney it's almost midnight, but it's Saturday!!!
    No alarm tomorrow ~ yes!

  11. Lovely shots of the birds!
Did you take these pics yourself?
I don't think we have those in Australia, well I certainly haven't seen any… We have other pretty birds plus a few kookaburras with their unique laugh….
