With all the excitement of the fox cubs, I've neglected some of the other garden residents.

The tadpoles have all but disappeared into the depths of the pond, but the damselfly nymphs are nearing maturity and will soon be emerging in all their glory. For now, they are still more alien than angel.

Other bugs are emerging as well. I've seen some ladybirds (no pictures yet), but this strange beetle was crawling along the pond wall yesterday.

And we still have hedgehogs, despite Bold's rather cavalier treatment of one a week or so ago.

I haven't seen the cubs tonight, so here's some video from last night.

Camera note: the pond life were photographed with the Canon 40D and Sigma 105mm F2.8 EX DG macro lens. The hedgehog was snapped with the EF 24-105 F4L IS USM lens.

  1. Hedgehog doesn`t seem to care too much about Bold 😛

  2. Darko, she should care, she really should!

  3. Erwin, thanks!

  4. Glad to see the rest of the hedgehogs are still around, though hopefully they'll keep away from the foxes from now on.

    Nice shot of the nymph!

  5. Adele, yes the hedgehogs need to take care.

  6. Hope they know how to be safe!

  7. Lois, most of the time they do.

  8. Lovelly photos. 😀

  9. Great photos. I think the beetle is one of the 'chafers' How big was it?

  10. Mark, thanks!

  11. Neil, the beetle was less than 1cm in length from what I recall. Definitely small (which I appreciate is not the level of technical info you need!)

  12. hmm perhaps not a chafer (not sure if there are perhaps small species though). One for WAB for ID?

  13. I could be wrong about the size of course!

  14. Great
