Just a very brief post tonight, but t afternoon we had a large flock of swifts feeding high above our garden. There were well over 100 wheeling and diving overhead, too many to get in one frame but these two shots give an idea.

And one of Shy Boy, the fox cub relaxing last night…

Now back to the Olympic Opening Ceremony, which after a slow start has me gripped. Much better than I expected (though the first 20 minutes were baffling and bizarre).

  2. Queen Elisabeth II and James Bond jumping from helicopter was hilarious, I liked it
    And Rowan Atkinson 😎

  3. Indeed. I was baffled by the first bit, despite the running commentary, and so bored and angered by the Parade of Athletes, with its constant stream of commercial interruptions, that I turned the bloody thing off.

  4. dW, you should have been watching CBC, only 4 commercials during the Parade of Athletes

  5. I couldn't get the CBC … I don't live in Detroit anymore, and I couldn't get San's URLs to work … they kept asking me to download some extra software, which I had already downloaded.
Actually, I don't think anyone lives in Detroit anymore …

  6. Wow, that's an exceptional swift flock. There must have been a lot of mosquitoes up there 😉

  7. Adele, I can't recall ever seeing quite so many together. A real feeding frenzy and if they have managed to reduce the local mosquito population then all the more kudos to them. 🙂

  8. dW, aah, commercial breaks. We didn't have any, just continuous coverage from start to finish. I have to admit that we skipped out on most of the athletes walking round the stadium. That can get a bit wearing after a while.

  9. Darko, the whole ceremony has grown on me the more I think about it. I think I was hooked when I heard the Sex Pistols' cry of 'God Save the Queen'.

  10. Well, it's been a prime year over there for mosquito production … I reckon that accounts for it. Still, it's odd to see mosquitoes so high.

  11. dW, to be honest I ave little idea of what insects fly at those heights, but there must be a lot for the swifts to be gathering like that. There may well be some young ones up among them (which might account for the number).
