A word of warning, this short clip shows the true nature of the fox (a hunter… the vixen snares a hedgehog), and a prickly problem for hedgehogs  It also illustrates the cycle of nature. Both clips were on the trail cam last night, about 40 minutes apart.

19 Apr 2010Twelve seconds isn't long to consume prey. Almost like it was more motivated by competition than predation (though the outcome is the same). A a rare thing to witness, even by trailcam. Sad of course, but that's the way the world works…

19 Apr 2010I think you're right about the competition. She obviously fancied that markie just a bit too much. I do feel sorry for the hedgehog… she's usually been fine with them. 🙁

20 Apr 2010The second part of the clip is a prickly situation indeed!

20 Apr 2010Just a bit! But with a happier ending, no doubt, than the first part.

20 Apr 2010So the hedgehog was definitely consumed? Then the other hedge moves in for a bit o fun.
I wonder if the fox and the 2nd hedge had an agreement…hmm.

20 Apr 2010Andy, I don't know what happened after she took the hedgehog away. She may have gone back for it later. The second hedgehog was larger and probably a little wiser.
