I was out watching the dog fox tonight. He was on his best behaviour, resting near the top of the steps.
After a few minutes we were disturbed by a noise from the rear of the garden. It was one of the cubs. Recently they've tended to scarper if I'm out there… but for once the youngster rushed to the front of the garden.
He paused at the edge of the lawn and then approached the adult. There was a very brief stand off. Neither fox showed any teeth, and neither made a sound. But it was clear that for once the adult wasn't going to give any ground. He just sort of glared, and curled his tail in what is a distinctive gesture. The cub held his own ground for no more than a second or two before running off, conceding the ground to the adult. The sequence of three photos here are all taken within a minute.
The adult hung around for about another five minutes. The close-up is today's Fox of the Day, but I'll include it here for convenience, along with another that I particularly like.
Alongside the foxes, I plan to photograph some autumnal scenes as part of the Autumn Photo Network (APN) The first one is simply a sunset from this evening, taken from the rear of the garden. It's not quite autumn here yet, but we did get some rain today which is good news for the garden. There are links to all the APN contributors in the side-bar. Check them out over the coming weeks. It will be interesting to compare the season across the globe.

23 Sep 2006The backward position of the youngster’s ears shows without a doubt that he is in submission mode.
Good set of photos! 🙂
