My hard drive has lost all its apps. Data ok or backed up, but PC unusable. Standard recovery techniques all fail 🙁

So off line for a short while. I suspect the major defrag is part of the problem, but even a DOS search can't find my programs. :insane: Posting this via OperaMini.

  1. Hope your computer makes a speedy recovery :worried:

  2. 🙁 🙁 🙁 Shit happens…

  3. Your 17 hours defrag scared me at first place. I think your hard drive is :rip:

  4. Well I'm going to try to rescue as much as I can from the old machine, but I gave up the main battle without a fight and have just got a new PC. Downside is that it has Vista, upside is that it has plenty of RAM and storage. Now for the tedium of getting it to behave and look the way I like it. Plus re-installing all the software I use. But I'm on-line and so far so good. 😀

My old machine was incredibly noisy which was part of the problem, and had become prone to crash or freeze which is why I was trying to sort it out. Guess it proves the worth of backing up the important things, most of which I have.

  5. Oh dear, hope the new PC will be ok 🙂

Opera works better on my Vista PC, not sure why many dont like Vista, is it because its cluttered with the clock, temp of a selected country and long news section on the right hand of the4 screen such as mine?

Think that can get turned off but i like it. 😀

  6. Can you downgrade to WinXP? With solid amount of RAM it would work excellent

  7. Mark, I'm getting thre. My main grip with Vista is that it isn't compatible with all my software (some of which is ancient, to be fair). I've cleared most of the clutter of the screen :p and am beginning to get it to look how I want. Anyway, very nearly back in business 😉

  8. Darko, I asked about that but it wasn't an option on this machine. Have to say this is a heck of a lot quicker (and quieter) than my old PC which sounded like I had a aircraft in the room with me :yikes: I'll get used to it (and may revert to 'classic' view (which is how I had XP set up).

  9. My Xp is set up in classic view, too  I am considered extremely conservative in IT community here 😆

  10. Best wishes for your computer problems. We've all had them and can sympathize.

  11. I actually prefer Vista, now I've got used to it. I had to upgrade my Photoshop Elements from 2.0 to 7.0, and it took a lot of effort to get some of my ancient computer games to work 😉 but, it's given me a much better version of Movie Maker and I like the clock and date.

PS I hope your computer didn't die on your birthday, like mine did last year :insane: :rip:

  12. Have you ever noticed that computers do this at the most inopportune times, on a big scale down to the smaller stuff. For e.g. this morning I was working on a number of photos in Photoshop and had just typed a lengthy comment when poof, my computer decided to shut down for an update :insane: So I relate to your pain. I hope all goes well for both of your recoveries 🙂

  13. Darko, I haven't figured out if I can get a true classic view in Vista, but I may give it a go. So far, things are working out well, so not all bad (and very little lost).

  14. Thanks Lois! Fortunately more a (costly) inconvenience than a disaster. I needed an upgrade though, and this just brought it forward a bit.

  15. Adele, I'm sure I'll get used to it. I've got the 'premium' version which means I get a few of the bells and whistles such as rotating 'pages' to navigate between windows. I can't use my scanner though (ancient Win98 original, so not 64bit compatible), and I can't synch my PDA on it either (that's much more of a nuisance). I have managed to rescue my archived email from Pegasus Mail, which because it was installed in the root directory survived the crash  😀 And most of my Opera browser configuration was stored on a pen drive 😉

  16. Christine, don't they just! It's astonishing how much we rely on them these days, but I've long learnt the benefit of storing off the machine, and have just transferred some files that originated on an old 286 machine, so are around 20 years old :faint: I think I can still read them.
