Playing around here using the Opera mail/newsreader. I'm still not entirely convinced with it for mail (I duplicate everything in Pegasus), but as a newsreader it's great and I haven't been near my (paid for) Forte Agent in weeks. (Agent really needs to sort out the failure to deal properly with multiple servers from one interface.)

Anyway, I'm subscribed to a number of Palm/PDA groups but I'm generally only interested in messages talking about the Tungsten C. Up until today it's been a case of trawling through reams of postings until I find the ones I want (if any).

Well… 💡 Filter the thing…. So I've added a filter "Match messages where entire message contains Tungsten C" and sure enough I can now spot the blighters at a glance. This beats hands down any search tool I've used in the past. To my mind it's a killer function for newsreading.

  1. I've only just started using M2 for newsgroups as well & so far I have been really impressed. My only problem so far is that I don't want to see newsgroup messages in my unrewad & received folders. I'm deselecting the right options in the view > show menu, but everytime I restart Opera the changes have not been saved 🙁

  2. I had some problems with filters as well. I was getting newsfeeds showing in some email filters!

I'm not sure what the problem was, but I suspect it may have been caused by moving some messages into 'learning' filters. The problem seems to have resolved itself (so far) by deleting some of the more problematic filters and setting them up again. I also had problems highlighting 'filter existing messages' (it caused all sorts of weird results).

But I've no idea why the settings aren't holding once established.

I really hope they resolve some of this soon. I just love being able to browse with the panel open so I can nip into mail/news mode when something interesting arrives.
