As trailed in yesterday's blog, it's time to enjoy some of the Regent's Park squirrels. For those who don't know the park, it's a vast parkland in central London, surrounded by some of the busiest roads in the capital. Step inside the (ornate) park gates and choose between boating lakes, rose gardens, London Zoo and acres of open space. Of course, located where it is, the park is nearly always busy; and the many animals that live there have developed a strongly cooperative relationship with the human visitors. Away from the waterside, the innumerable squirrels are undoubtedly the most popular attraction, spending most of their daylight time happily being hand fed and posing for photographs. They may indeed work for peanuts; but don't they enjoy it!
Camera note: all shots taken with the EF 200mm f/2.8L II USM.

Wow climbing up people's legs to get food – neat!
They are so adorable – the more photos of them the better! 🙂

14 Nov 2010Darko, almost too confident! They run up to anyone who stops. 🙂

14 Nov 2010Marilyn, the guy feeding them here was encouraging them, but I've seen them creep up behind people and just leap at their legs! :yikes:

15 Nov 2010If squirrels can mug, these guys are doing it very well! Though I wouldn't want to handfeed one after my accident a few years ago (when I got bitten on the thumb by an injured squirrel – boy did it hurt!)

15 Nov 2010Adele, I remember you mentioning about how sharp their teeth are. These guys are probably more careful (and less intimidated), after all it's how they survive!

15 Nov 2010I always heard "if you pay peanuts, you get monkeys". I wonder if squirrels are better? 😀

15 Nov 2010Mick, so true! I fear the way things are going we're probably all about to become monkeys :monkey: Or squirrels 😉

24 Jul 2012They were at least this tame on the University of Chicago campus … I was talking with a friend one day, he was holding a sandwich in his hand, and a squirrel, who had been expecting a bit of sandwich, became impatient, ran up his leg and body, out his arm and leapt to the ground with the sandwich! Salami, I think … and yes, squirrels eat meat.

25 Jul 2012dW, oh they certainly eat meat. The Regent's Park wildlife is among the least wild I've come across. It makes for very easy photography and is a real haven in the centre of one of the busiest parts of London.
