Given that the herring gull is one of the most commonly seen birds locally, I post precious few photos of them.

They are endangered (they are on the Red List, the most at risk category), but the local population is strong and they are often perceived as pests. They are certainly noisy gregarious, and prone to steal ice cream cones from the hands of startled tourists. One day I will manage a shot of an ice cream theft, but for now I'll settle with this sequence of a local gull landing on a neighbouring roof.

And to close, another short video clip. This time an unedited sequence of the badger and Shutterbug (the fox) together in the garden.

Camera note: all shots taken with the Canon 7D EF 400mm f/5.6L USM lens. Video captured with the Bushnell Trophy Cam

  1. Words, PS: glad you found a name for the fox. After his antics with the camera, I think it's a good one!

  2. Words, nice series of shots. I seem to have a great appeal for white birds! But, I do like gulls!
You got a good video of the fox and badger. I didn't know they were that tolerant of each other!

  3. These are excellent pictures.
I make it not so much to make sharp images in a sequence.

  4. Great sequence of the gull, I can imagine him calculating the approach to hit that chimney top.

That would be a great capture! Except maybe the sadness of the empty hand of the lost ice cream.

  6. Robin, thanks! I like gulls landing. You get a real sense of movement as they adjust at the last moment. As for the fox and badger, generally they skirt around each other. Aggression is more likely when there are young about.

  7. Steffi, thanks. The way I've got the camera set up I focus with a rear button, not with the shutter button. It helps in these situations as you can adjust more quickly if the bird moves.

  8. Mick thanks (and for the name)

  9. Andy, I'll have to wait until summer and then hang around on Brighton beach. I reckon I'll get plenty of opportunities if I do.

  10. No problem 🙂 To Shutterbug.

  11. I think visitors to the coast probably pay more attention to gulls than the locals do! I do have them here of course, but they're mostly flying high overhead or just wandering around in farmlands. They might be a bit strident for some people's taste, but they do make entertaining subjects for the camera!

Nice shot of the badger

  12. Adele, you're right about not paying attention to the gulls. Most days I don't even register them but they are the one species that are always around. I don't think I ever don't see them!

  13. Excellent series showing the landing. Our gulls make enough noise that it's nearly impossible not to notice them.

  14. Lois, I know what you mean. Ours are noisy too. 🙂
