I love herons, and this is a very nice series of photos. 😀

Funny how they fly with their necks folded up. It seems most birds stretch their necks out when flying.

Oh yeah. I was thinking about geese and ducks.

I think pelicans fly with their necks folded up, too.

Geese, swans, and flamingos must have really strong neck muscles to have such long necks and still manage to hold them out straight while flying. Perhaps the neck-folding birds aren't as strong. 💡 Or maybe the neck-folding birds are lazier, but smarter?

They also have tiny heads, and bills, compared to herons and pelicans. That may have something to do with it.

Mickeyjoe, nice observation. I hadn't thought of that before. The size of the bill may well be the reason… and aerodynamics!

Deb, thanks. I love seeing herons and finally have found a local site where at least this one seems to spend some time.
