Installing Opera Mini on a Palm

Updated 24 January 2006 – official launch day It's now officially a breeze!

Step 1) You need to have the correct Java environment on your Palm. You can pick this up from WebSphere. Hotsync this to to your Palm in the usual way. This installs the IBM Java VM app. You also get preferences in the standard 'preferences' Palm interface. Install the Java VM via a hot sync. Edit March 2008: The free download is no longer available. the best I can find to date is SuperWaba VM for Palm, but please note I have not tested it. Please comment if you have tried it. Also check latest comments for other sources.

Step 2) Then go to http://mini.opera.com and follow the download wizard instructions. Direct link for Palm devices.

    Can you suggest a particular web host? I've signed up for three so far, the first two never sent me EMail confirmation and the third wouldn't allow direct linkingc to the files — do these freaking morons understand how the Internet is supposed to work???

    Thanks for turning me on to Opera Mini. It'll never replace Blazer on my T|X (though I might use it on my phone), but it's good to see what my pages will look like in as many browsers as possible — besides, it's cool. Anyway, your instructions are needlessly complex…I found a simpler way to install Opera Mini on a Palm.

    1. Get the Java VM as described above.
    2. Make sure your Palm can connect to the Internet, then launch the Java VM.
    3. Select Install and enter http://mini.opera.com/mini.jad for the URL.
    4. Enjoy!

    No WAP browser needed…but in the process of discovering this, I found a nice WAP browser for Palm called WAP Universe ( http://www.wapuniverse.com ).

    Thanks for the feedback… appreciated. I couldn't get the direct Java VM route to work on my T|C, hence the complicated work around. But I'm not surprised that there's an alternative. 🙂

    Hmmm. I wonder what the difference is that's keeping it from working for you. FWIW, I'm using IBM Java VM 2.2.012.

    Hi T S Kwek,

    Make sure you have the latest version of Opera Mini. There were problems with a couple of issues of version 3 on the Palm which had exactly the problem you describe. The latest version should be ok.

    Hi again,

    I don't know about the stylus, but you can use BackupBuddyVFS to backup all your data to the SD card. You can set it to do it daily. It also allows you to restore everything from the card (useful if you ever have to do a hard reset).

    The correct way is definiteiy to use the prc on the OperaMini site. The different Palm devices are listed here:

    Not sure about your grafitti problem. I've never used it on the T|C as it comes with a thumb(key)board. It may be worth checking out whether anyone has had this problem on the OperaMini forums

    I've never heard of that happening with any Palm user before. OperaMini cannot launch another programme by itself. Sounds like you didn't set up the profiles properly in the JavaVM settings so the TX was defaulting to Blazer when you went to the editor. That's all I can think could have happened.

    It's a long while since I did the install, but as I recall you need two files for the JavaVM: J9JavaVMMidp20.prc and JavaVMCheck_enUS.prc. You get to the preferences via the standard Palm preference dialogue.

    The only other advice I can think of is to check out the Brighthand and Opera Mini forums (see links in my posts from May 2007 and Jan 2007 in the comments above). Hope you get it working.

    I take it you've installed the JavaVM application and I wonder if ti is something to do with how the Treo is making the phone connection that's the problem. You should be able to find some help on the OperaMini forum and specific phone compnay settings are here.

    With the prc file, you should just be able to download the prc to your desktop and install it through the standard 'quick install' software, but I've not tried this with recent editions of Opera Mini.
