Who should show up tonight but fox #1. Friendly as ever, he hung around with us for about 20 minutes. I think he must have read my post from earlier today and got jealous, or maybe it's the (nearly) full moon that's brought him out. Whatever the reason, he was on excellent form.

By the looks of things, he's been in a few scrapes of late. You can see some light scarring on his muzzle in this photo, which may explain some of the screeching we've heard in recent nights. I had thought that the territorial battles were over by late autumn, but from what I've been reading it seems they continue right through to the end of the mating season (around now). He's also still nibbling at the upper part of his tail, but overall he's in fine shape and was plainly pleased to see us.
