I was checking my website referral stats last night and came across an entry which showed a surprising number of hits coming via an article on the Web Standards Group site. What was it?, I wondered. Maybe a link to an example of a wholly non-compliant page? That seemed possible, but unlikely. My site isn't standards compliant (way too much work as every page is hand coded), but it's far from the worst offender out there, and it does work on all browsers.

I took a look and it turns out that it was an interview with David Storey, Opera's Chief 'Web Opener' (the team that works on standards compliance, 'open the web' issues and so on). 'Oh my god, it is about my non-compliant site' was my first thought and I started scurrying through the links to see what on earth they were using as an example. I finally found it.

Some while ago (when I first started using Opera) I was looking through some of its accessibility features, and did a mock-up page which demonstrates the incredible benefits of Opera for those with visual impairment. In essence it's a quick combination of the small screen rendering feature combined with massive zoom. And lo and behold David had picked up on it (and provided a link!):

We are also committed to accessibility and have many features that support this. One cool trick I've just been shown is to use our Small Screen Rendering with our page zoom feature. I can see this being very useful for those people with low vision.

Here's the interview with David in full.
