The weather forecast was hopeless today. Heavy rain and lightning was forecast. We got bright sunshine blue skies instead. I'm not complaining.

My May Birds album had been looking a little thin until today, but the good weather brought out the birds in the lunchtime sun and I've added six new shots, including a kestrel in flight, a grizzly looking jackdaw, and this snatched shot of a duck in flight.

There were more surprises when I got home. Roofy was back on the roof. Relaxing, and then clambering up to the top.

Clambering

While he was up there I noticed the wound I noticed on Monday seemed slightly more prominent. I had the chance to investigate more closely when he popped down into the garden. There are two distinct wounds on the top of his head. Having seen them close up I am beginning to wonder whether they might be caused by ticks, with the recent encounter with a hedgehog being a possible source. This is speculation at the moment and I'm trying to get more information about possible causes, and risks (the main one presumably being infection). This is a shot of the wound on the rear of his head. There appears to be some scabbing, but the loss of hair is very obvious.

  1. That flying duck is amazing. Wow, great shot. Also nice the kestrel  :eyes:

Sorry to read and to see the graceful Roofy is wounded. 😥

  2. Great pictures! I love the shot of Roofy clambering over the tiles! 😀

Kelly's had a couple of ticks and they looked more like warts than anything else. One of them she removed herself :yuck: but the other was on her eyebrow, and the area went a bit scabby and hairless for a while afterwards (it was on her for a couple of days). I also recall it bleeding a little.

I guess Roofy might have been scratching the affected area? I read that moose in Algonquin sometimes get vast numbers of ticks, enough to cause anemia, but I haven't heard of that happening to a fox. Strange though.

  3. One question about the duck photo: did you set your camera manually or you used some of the modes? The photo looks like one of the predefined modes was used, but sharper, probably you have an expensive camera 🙂

  4. Great shots. Poor roofy not only does he have a wound on his head but he also shares his name with the streetname for a certain drug

  5. Ally: Thanks. I was pleased with both those shots.

Adele: that's useful to know about Kelly. I'd seen some info on the web about anemia, but I suspect cubs are more prone to that. He certainly seems lively enough, and passed through late last night with some food for the family. I'm not keen on intervening unless necessary while he's feeding the young.

Gdare: That duck photo was taken in 'shutter priorty' (TV in Canon-speak) mode. I'd been taking pictures of them on the edge of the pond in bright daylight so didn't adjust the setting. Speed was set to 1/640. The aperture shot down to about 5.4 as the trees came into view. The autofocus did the rest. I was using this lens.

And Sprogger: Oh dear, I wasn't aware of the street-name "issue" with his name. Which sort of shows my age I guess.
